Traffic Advisory: Temporary Street Closure in the 2800 Block of Chartres

NEW ORLEANS — On Monday, Dec. 20, weather permitting, the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works’ contractor, Roubion Roads and Streets, will close the 2800 block of Chartres to vehicular traffic for approximately four weeks to accommodate construction on the Bywater-Marigny reconstruction project. Residents in this area are being notified of the closure via a neighborhood canvass.

During this time, crews will excavate and repair underground water lines. Public safety is our priority; barricades will be placed one block away in all directions. West bound traffic is being rerouted through Montegut Street onto Royal Street and then onto St Ferdinand Street.

The $5.7 million Bywater-Marigny Group A project was designed by Gaea Consultants, LLC and is being constructed by Roubion Roads & Streets, LLC. Click here to view a map of the project. The scope of work includes:

  • Repaving the asphalt roadway from curb-to-curb;
  • Patching the roadway with asphalt or concrete;
  • Repairing damaged sidewalks and driveway aprons;
  • Installing Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant curb ramps at intersections; and
  • Replacing / repairing damaged underground water, sewer, and / or drainage lines.

The entire project is scheduled to be complete in spring 2022, weather permitting. In general, the contractor is working from 7 a.m. until sunset, Monday through Friday.

Since May 2018, DPW has completed 99 projects with an estimated value of $282 million. Today, more than 70 roadwork projects are under construction, with an estimated value of nearly $700 million.
