New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board to Conduct Adult Mosquito Abatement

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board (NOMTRCB) will conduct adult mosquito abatement tonight in the following areas:

  • Gentilly in the area bounded by I-610, Bayou St. John, Lakeshore Drive, Franklin Avenue, Leon C. Simon Drive and Peoples Avenue
  • Fairgrounds in the area bounded by I-610, Bayou St. John, Esplanade Avenue and North Broad Street
  • Treme/Lafitte and Seventh Ward in the area bounded by North Broad Street, Esplanade Avenue, North Galvez Street, Canal Street, I-10 and St. Bernard Avenue
  • The Upper Ninth Ward in the area bounded by Franklin Avenue, Florida Avenue, Japonica Street and the Mississippi River.

Treatments will be conducted by truck from 8 p.m. to 12 a.m., weather permitting.

NOMTRCB responds to residential service requests submitted through 311 or by direct contact with the department. In July, the most common sources of mosquito breeding found during residential inspections have been containers filled with water, standing water on or near residential properties, or unmaintained swimming pools and fountains. Abatement activities tonight will target mosquitoes emerging from these types of habitat, including container-breeding and floodwater species.

Reducing the risks of mosquito bites and eliminating mosquito breeding grounds is a community effort. NOMTRCB asks that residents remain vigilant and inspect areas around the home and yard at least once per week to reduce or eliminate mosquito breeding sites.

Protect Your Home

  • Remove empty containers such as tires, plant pots or vases, wheelbarrows, jars and anything else that can hold water.
  • Repair leaky sprinklers or outside faucets that result in pooling of water.
  • Clean out clogged rain gutters.
  • Change water weekly in containers that cannot be removed such as bird baths, pet water bowls, or non-functional fountains. Scrub the sides of the containers to remove mosquito eggs that may have been deposited.
  • Rain barrels and other water collection devices must be screened, and collected water should be used within one week.
  • Maintain pools and fountains by appropriately treating, cleaning and circulating them.
  • Aerate ornamental ponds or stock them with commercially available larvicides or mosquitofish.
  • If using larvicides, always follow the labeled instructions.
  • Contact mosquito control for mosquito-related questions or issues.

Protect Yourself

  • Make sure window and door screens are in good condition to prevent mosquitoes from getting inside the home.
  • Cover gaps in walls, doors and windows.
  • Avoid spending time outdoors from dusk to dawn.
  • If outdoor activities are planned, wear repellents containing EPA-registered active ingredients with proven effectiveness such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535 or oil of lemon eucalyptus.
  • Use A/C or fans if possible. If outside, sitting in an air stream can reduce the risk of bites.
  • When using insect repellent, always follow the instructions on the product label.
