MAYOR CANTRELL PRAISES WORK OF ORLEANS DELEGATION AT 2022 LEGISLATIVE SESSION
NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell today praised the Orleans Delegation for their work during the 2022 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature.
"This legislative session, members of the Orleans Delegation fought diligently against some of the most extremist fringe legislation ever proposed in the Louisiana Legislature," said Mayor Cantrell. "A plethora of far-right conservative legislation that aimed to, among other things, limit teaching accurate history to our children, criminalize physicians and women's reproductive health, enact discriminatory laws targeting our LGBTQIA+ family and neighbors, further weaken gun laws to place weapons of mass destruction into the hands of any 18-year-old who wants them and turn our schools into gun ranges. Despite the onslaught of nefarious bills introduced by those who are far from having the best interest of all their citizens, our members dug in and remained focused on delivering positive change and resources for the City of New Orleans. The Louisiana Legislature is a better institution thanks to the commitment and dedication of our delegation to serving the people of New Orleans."
Highlights of the 2022 Regular Session of the Louisiana Legislature
- Secured $130.9 million in capital outlay funds for critical infrastructure projects, most notably $32.7 million in Priority 1 ($71.1 million total) for the Sewerage & Water Board of New Orleans substation
- Secured $2.3 million in supplemental appropriations for various City departments, including $1.1 million for two sanitation transfer centers
- Responded to several bills aimed to dictate policy to the City of New Orleans on drainage infrastructure, firearms, vaccines, emergency declarations and public health mandates
- Passed all bills included in the City’s legislative package, at the request of various City agencies, aimed at improving the ability to govern such as domestic violence and firearms (HB585), illegal demolitions (HB193) and public records modernization (HB473)
