NEW ORLEANS, LA – As tax preparation season gets underway, Mayor Landrieu continues to urge families with low or moderate incomes to keep more of what they earned by applying for the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
The EITC is a refundable federal tax credit for eligible working families that could provide up to $5,891 extra in federal income tax refunds for individuals who earn $51,000 or less annually. In partnership with the Asset Building Coalition of Southeast Louisiana (ABC-SELA), Mayor Landrieu launched an EITC and Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Campaign on January 25, 2013, national EITC Awareness Day, to encourage eligible working families to use free services available for preparing their federal and state tax returns.
According to the Internal Revenue Service, millions of workers overlook this credit because they don't know about it, or don’t know how to claim it.
“Empowering working families is essential to growing the New Orleans economy,” Mayor Landrieu said. “We want to make sure to get the word out about how eligible people can apply for the tax relief they deserve.”
Free tax preparation assistance will be provided through April 15th at 15 VITA sites located across Orleans Parish. Residents can locate a VITA site at www.unitedwaysela.org/eitc or by calling 2-1-1. Residents can also take advantage of MyFreeTaxes.com, which provides free online federal and state tax preparation for individuals or families with combined incomes of $57,000 or less.
