NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, the City of New Orleans and the New Orleans Recreation and Development Commission reopened Wisner Playground at 4877 Laurel Street in the West Riverside neighborhood following a $309,000 improvement project to the facility. Enhancements include landscaping, seating, garbage cans, and a dog run allowing pet owners to walk their dogs off-leash in a designated, fenced area.
“The City of New Orleans is committed to improving neighborhood parks and playgrounds,” Mayor Mitch Landrieu said. “The enhancements to Wisner Playground, including the new dog run, will benefit the entire West Riverside community. Pet owners have asked for more designated space to walk their dog off-leash and the City is delivering.”
Vic Richard, CEO of the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission said, “The new Wisner Playground is a prime example of the new NORDC we are working to build and we are proud to have worked with the Friends of Wisner Park on this project. The new dog run will allow pet owners to walk their dog off-leash while residents can enjoy the open green space.”
District B Councilmember LaToya Cantrell said, “My office is impressed with the hard work all the community and city stakeholders have done to make this day reality. I know it wasn't easy but this new park is a win-win for everyone. It is a great day for this Uptown community and all the users of the park.”
City Council President Jacquelyn Brechtel Clarkson said, “Another great playground in another great neighborhood! They not only go together but complement each other’s’ revival for increased quality of life.”
Councilmember-at-Large Stacy Head said, “I’m delighted that these long-awaited updates are complete and that neighbors can once again enjoy this great park with their children and pets! The neighborhood really came together to support Wisner Playground and I know that they have even more improvements in mind for the future.”
Deputy Mayor of Facilities, Infrastructure, and Community Development Cedric Grant said, “Parks and playgrounds are central to the City’s place-based development strategy and serve as important gathering places for the community. The West Riverside neighborhood has embraced Wisner Playground as a cherished space and the new enhancements to the park will allow for this community to grow even stronger.”
Funding for this $309,000 project comes from City Bond funds. This project was designed by HMS Architects, APC and was constructed by Robert Wolfe Construction. Garden of Eden Lawn Care served as DBE on this project.
Wisner Playground is open Monday through Sunday, 6:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
