Mayor Mitch Landrieu provides status update on weather-related closures

January 29, 2014

NEW ORLEANS, LA – Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced that all City government offices and services will resume normal operations tomorrow, Thursday, January 30, 2013. Additionally, all Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB), Recovery School District (RSD) and Archdiocese of New Orleans schools will reopen tomorrow.

City Hall and municipal courts will resume regular hours tomorrow. City services, including garbage and recycling pickup, will operate as scheduled. All New Orleans Recreation Department Commission (NORDC) facilities and New Orleans Public Library branches will reopen tomorrow.  The Sewerage and Water Board’s offices will also reopen tomorrow.

Mayor Landrieu urged residents to continue to exercise caution as conditions improve following Tuesday’s winter storm, which left icy road conditions throughout the metro area. Earlier today, the National Weather Service cancelled a Winter Storm Warning for Orleans Parish and issued a Hard Freeze Warning until 9 a.m. tomorrow.

The City’s Emergency Operations Center is still activated and operating around the clock through this weather event and the City is continuing to monitor conditions and coordinate with surrounding parishes and the State to ensure the safety of residents.

NOLA 311

NOLA 311 began operating 24 hours a day this morning until further notice. Residents are encouraged to call NOLA 311 for non-emergency information related to winter weather.

TAKE PRECAUTIONS

With a Hard Freeze Warning in effect through tomorrow morning, all citizens should take appropriate precautions to protect themselves from the potentially dangerous effects of this weather. Exposure to temperatures near freezing, combined with strong winds, for an extended period of time can cause serious medical problems.   • Be aware of the wind chill factor;
  • Wear layers, hat, and gloves;
  • Carry a cell phone; and
  • Sprinkle cat litter or sand on icy patches.
