City to focus on employment opportunities during NOLA FOR LIFE's Black Business Month Observance

NEW ORLEANS, LA- This week, in observance of Black History Month, the City will host a number of events that will celebrate Black entrepreneurship and economic empowerment during NOLA FOR LIFE’s Black Business Month.

“This week’s NOLA FOR LIFE Black Business Month activities are specifically focused on providing employment opportunities for young people in New Orleans,” said Mayor Landrieu. “Together, with the support of African American entrepreneurs, we must make it a priority to connect young African-American males with key opportunities that will allow them to participate in our city’s economic growth.”

Throughout the month of February, Black Business Month will consist of a series of weekly events and major announcements that will increase the competitiveness of small businesses, promote entrepreneurship, and strengthen workforce development opportunities.

This week’s events include the following:

  • On Tuesday and Thursday, February 18 and 20, 2014, from 9:00am to 3:00pm, the Office of Workforce Development and JOB1 will partner with Global Staffing to recruit local jobseekers for available employment opportunities. Global Staffing, a temporary staffing agency, will be conducting on-site interviews for the following positions: cashiers, concession attendants and food servers. The interviews will take place at JOB1 headquarters located at 3400 Tulane Avenue, 2nd floor. Jobseekers interested in participating are encouraged to wear business attire.
  • An Employer Fidelity Bonding Session will be held on Wednesday, February 19, 2014, from 9:00am- 10:30am. Coordinated with the Office of Workforce Development and JOB1, this effort will session will exclusively target employers in the greater New Orleans area. Employers will receive information regarding Fidelity Bonding, which is an incentive for hiring high-risk job seekers. 
  • The Office of Economic Development will be hosting a business information that covers resources and opportunities available for business owners and entrepreneurs on Thursday, February 20, from 5:30pm – 7:00 pm. Specific presentations for the session will include “Patents and Trademarks” presented by the City of New Orleans Law Department and “10,000 Small Businesses Initiative” presented by Delgado Community College Workforce Development and Education. The session will take place at the Regional Transportation Management Center located at 10 Veterans Memorial Boulevard.
  • On Friday, February 21, 2014, the Office of Workforce Development and JOB1will launch the pilot program for a rapid-attachment -to- work model for formerly incarcerated individuals in coordination with NOLA FOR LIFE and the Department of Sanitation. JOB1 has pinpointed 50 ex-offenders to work with the Department of Sanitation to receive temporary job opportunities assisting in Mardi Gras clean-up activities. Last week, JOB1 conducted work readiness workshops and trainings with ex-offenders to prepare them for these positions which are intended to provide immediate income, work experience and job coaching to assist with the transition back to full- time employment.
