City Accepts $45 Million Settlement Offer on Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill

NEW ORLEANS – Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced that the City of New Orleans has accepted a $45 million settlement offer for the alleged economic damages that resulted from the April 20, 2010, Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico that devastated the region’s coastal wetlands.

Construction to begin on New Rehabilitation Facility in Mid-City

NEW ORLEANS– Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the New Orleans Business Alliance will join Cobalt Medical Development to start construction on a new rehabilitation facility, a major step toward growing and strengthening New Orleans’ biomedical corridor. Based in Dallas, Texas, Cobalt specializes in caring for Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI) and concussions. The $24 million capital expenditure will create approximately 160 construction jobs and another 178 permanent jobs in three years.

NORDC to Host 'First Responders Day' with Youth Summer Camps

NEW ORLEANS – On Wed., July 8, 2015, the New Orleans Recreation Development Commission (NORDC) will bring together New Orleans first responders and more than 3,900 youth to participate in NORDC youth summer camps for First Responders Day at Storyland in City Park. The event is scheduled to run from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and will be an opportunity for youth to learn about emergency preparedness, healthy lifestyles, fire safety and NOPD community policing and engagement.

City Officials Urge Public to Visit Local Parks to Celebrate National Park and Recreation Month

NEW ORLEANS—Today, New Orleans officials encouraged residents to visit local parks and recreation centers as part of a nationwide celebration on the 30th anniversary of Park and Recreation Month—an annual event created by the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA) and celebrated every July since 1985. Mayor Landrieu and City officials said the City has drastically expanded the number of parks and recreational opportunities since 2010.

National Weather Service Recognizes New Orleans as StormReady Community

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness (NOHSEP) announced today that, through continued efforts to increase resident safety in the face of severe weather, the National Weather Service (NWS) recognized New Orleans as a StormReady® community. The city qualified after a year-long application process during which NOHSEP demonstrated its solid communication system and comprehensive, multi-hazard emergency operations plan.

Mayor Landrieu, City Council to Hold Series of Community Meetings Across City

NEW ORLEANS – Beginning Mon., July 13, 2015, Mayor Mitch Landrieu and the New Orleans City Council will host a series of community meetings to discuss budget priorities as the City begins its 2016 budgeting for outcomes process. Other City officials attending will include deputy mayors, New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) Superintendent Michael Harrison, New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) Superintendent Tim McConnell and other department and agency leaders.

Abandoned Vehicle Auction to be Held July 7

NEW ORLEANS – On Tuesday, July 7, 2015, at 9:00 a.m., the City of New Orleans’ Department of Public Works (DPW) will hold its third abandoned vehicle auction of 2015. The auction will be located at Almonaster Auto Pound, 10200 Almonaster Avenue, New Orleans, LA 70127. Vehicle preview day and buyer registration will be held today until 4:00 p.m. No one will be admitted after 3:30 p.m. for security reasons.

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans announced that City Hall will be closed on Friday, July 3, 2015, in observance of the Independence Day holiday on Saturday, July 4, 2015.
