CITY OF NEW ORLEANS, OFFICE OF WORKFORCE DEVELOPMENT CELEBRATE JOB1 GRAND OPENING AND CAREER FAIR
NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell today was joined by Office of Workforce Development (OWD) Director Sunae Villavaso, New Orleans Workforce Development Board Chair Gregory Curtis, Councilmember Lesli Harris of District B, Dryades YMCA Board Chair Pastor Tom Watson and Vice President for Equus Workforce Solutions Deborah Giordano for the JOB1 Grand Opening and Career Fair designed to provide on-site services, connect job seekers to high wage, high demand jobs and celebrate the opening of JOB1's new office located at 1307 Oretha Castle Haley Blvd.
“Today presented a great opportunity for our residents to explore various career opportunities and advancements, receive resume and application assistance and attend work readiness workshops,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “This open house and career fair is an innovative solution to many of the challenges we face around housing, public health and public safety because nothing stops a bullet like a job. I applaud the Office of Workforce Development’s consistent efforts to train and prepare our residents for skilled, high-paying jobs, focusing especially on our most vulnerable populations. As our economy continues to expand and diversify, we will continue to set our people up for success by exposing them to the several high-demand employment opportunities and ensuring they can support themselves and their families for generations to come.”
Continuing its mission of meeting our people where they are, JOB1 hosted a career fair from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Job seekers met with employers to get connected to jobs available within their organization, spoke with training providers about services and opportunities for enhanced skills or career changes and received resource information on additional services available to the community. JOB1 team members were also on-hand to discuss individual job seeker needs, with the opportunity to also register them for services and programs.
In addition, a ribbon cutting ceremony took place, celebrating JOB1’s recent move from its location on Tulane Avenue to the heart of Central City.
“JOB1 is excited about our new location on Oretha Castle Haley in the heart of Central City. We welcome residents to connect with us about jobs and other opportunities," said Villavaso. “Our team has and will continue to be intentional and focused on expanding partnerships, increasing opportunities for job seekers, providing greater upskill services via hands-on workshops and training programs, as well as expanding services for employers.”
