Two-Alarm Fire Causes Damage to Three Homes on Hickory St.

On Thursday, March 28, 2024, at 11:02 a.m., the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to a report of a fire at a home in the 7800 block of Hickory St. The first of sixteen NOFD apparatuses, supported by forty-seven Fire Operations personnel, arrived at 7812 Hickory St. at 11:07 a.m. Upon arrival the duplex that had been converted into a single-family home was heavily involved on its right side. The fire had begun to extend to the exterior wall of the two-story, wood-framed double to the immediate right, 7816-18 Hickory St. This prompted the request for a second alarm at 11:09 a.m. The occupied home on the left, 7810 Hickory St., also suffered mild to moderate damage from radiant heat to its right exterior wall.

The homeowner of the original fire building stated that she had only been gone for a short time to run a few errands. When she returned and opened to door on the left side of her home she was overwhelmed by smoke and call 911 immediately. The property suffered severe fire damage to its front/right side and attack. The home at 7816 Hickory St., suffered significant damage to its walls on the front/left side. But remarkably firefighters were able to contain the fire mostly to the exterior of the home. The incident was place under control at 11:48 a.m. None of the residents were home when the fire began. There were no injuries reported and the cause is currently under investigation.
