Firefighters lift concrete barrier off man in Central city

July 01, 2013

New Orleans, LA. – Wednesday, June 26, 2013 at 4:06 a.m. the New Orleans Fire Department (NOFD) responded to an Emergency Medical Service (EMS) call for assistance stating a man was trapped under a concrete barrier near the corner of Toulouse and Dorgenois St., just outside of the Southern Scrap central city facility.  A full one-alarm was called for immediately upon NOFD arrival to assist with lifting the almost 1-ton concrete slab off the victim.  According to the victim, he had stopped to urinate when the barrier, which had been stacked in front of him, fell over pinning him to the ground.  Fire Rescue crews used airbags to lift the slab approximately 18 inches off the ground to remove the victim from beneath. The entire process took about 45 minutes.  Five NOFD units carrying sixteen firefighters along with EMS crews were used to bring this incident under control at 4:56 a.m. The victim was transported to an area hospital with a broken ankle.
