Public Affairs Division


The Public Affairs Division is part of the Superintendents Office. The Public Information Officer (PIO) is responsible for acting as the official spokesperson for all release of information to the news media and informing the public through news media of current police operations and services.



Public Affairs Division Responsibilities

  • Gathering pertinent news worthy information from all commands for dissemination to the news media.
  • Responding to major crime scenes and major incidents and events which draw media attention. After arriving at crime scenes and major incidents, the Public Information Officers (PIO’s) coordinate the release of information to the news media.
  • Setting up press conferences, news briefings and any other gatherings where the Superintendent will address the news media, community groups or outside agency.
  • Receiving all Public Records Request from media outlets and coordinates the requests with the City Attorney’s Office, Police Record Room, and the command unit that is affected by the request.
  • Coordinating all award ceremonies and participates in the selection, notification of officers, writing and printing of award certificates and the actual presentation of the awards at the ceremony.
  • Coordinating intern program where requests are made by senior college students to gain college credits by learning different functions of the police department that coincide with their curriculum.
  • Coordinating a city wide program where high school students are given a job during summer months when schools are not in session. The students are rotated throughout the department in an effort to educate the students in all areas of police procedures.
