NEW ORLEANS, LA – The City of New Orleans and American Traffic Solutions (ATS) have released a video Public Service Announcement (PSA) to educate the community about the City’s Road Safety Camera Program. The video explains how the Road Safety Camera Program, which includes school zone, red-light and speed cameras, works to change driver behavior. It also highlights support of the program from police, emergency responders and pedestrian and bicycle safety advocates.

“With thousands of drivers, bicyclists and pedestrians on the roads every day, specifically in school zones, it’s our job to do everything in our power to increase road safety,” said Col. Mark Jernigan, Director of the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works. “We have come a long way in making New Orleans more walkable and bicycle-friendly but we still have work to do. We want the public to be aware that there are consequences for those who break the law and jeopardize the safety of our students, bicyclists, drivers, and pedestrians.”
Featured in the video is Dr. Kathryn Parker, director of KidsWalk Coalition and assistant director of The Prevention Research Center at Tulane University, who states, “Traffic cameras really do reduce speeding and collisions in schools zones and thereby improve safety for children and families walking in school zones.”
Viewers will see how the Road Safety Cameras work, using sensors, imbedded in the road that identify when a vehicle has entered the detection zone. If a speeding or red-light running violation occurs, the full technology of the Road Safety Camera system is initiated and the camera positioned behind the sensor is triggered. They will learn how law enforcement reviews the violation video and license plate images for approval prior to a citation being issued.
“The camera system is vital to the everyday working relationship pertaining to the New Orleans Police Department because it gives an extra set of eyes and evidence to help support the actual violations,” said Commander of NOPD Traffic Division Lt. Anthony Micheu. “If we can save one life because of any of the cameras placed we do believe that that’s an effective tool.”
