How to Sort for Curbside Pickup

Sorting Items Curbside

Rinse all food container items before placing in recycling roll carts. Curbside-sorting is not required.

Plastics

Recycle These Items Curbside

Plastic with #1 through #7 inside the triangular-shaped recycling symbol, beverage bottles, food containers (rinse), detergent bottles, shampoo bottles, prescription bottles, baby wipe containers, household cleaner and bleach bottles (empty and rinse), flower pots, buckets.

Do Not Recycle These Items Curbside

  • NO plastic bags*
  • NO styrofoam*
  • NO bubble wrap*
  • NO plastic film*
  • NO household garbage
  • NO yard trimmings
  • NO building materials
  • NO househould waste
  • NO hazardous waste (electronics, batteries, paint, chemicals, oil, or oil filters)
  • NO soiled papers (diapers, tissues, paper towels, paper plates, napkins, or pizza boxes)
  • NO clothes hangers
  • NO 6-pack rings
  • NO chemical containers
  • NO packing materials
  • NO plastic wrap

*Even though some fo these may have a recycling logo, they are not accepted.

 

Cardboard

Recycle These Items Curbside

  • Corrugated and paperboard boxes
  • 6, 12, and 24-pack drink cartons (flattened)
  • Paper egg cartons
  • Shoe boxes

Flatten corrugated boxes and place in bin or on ground next to bin. 

Do Not Recycle These Items Curbside

  • NO pizza boxes
  • NO plastic or foam packing material

 

Paper

Recycle These Items Curbside

  • Junk mail
  • Coupons
  • White or colored paper
  • Gift Wrap
  • Envelopes
  • Paper Grocery Bags
  • Shopping Bags
  • Catalogs
  • Magazines
  • Newspapers and inserts (remove rubber bands and plastic bags, and do not tie up newspapers)
  • Paperback books
  • Telephone books
  • Shredded Paper

Do Not Recycle These Items Curbside

  • NO soiled paper
  • NO photos
  • NO hard cover books
  • NO carbon paper
  • NO newspaper delivery bags
  • NO rubber bands

Metal

Recycle These Items Curbside

  • Aluminum, tin, and metal alloy beverage, food, and pet food cans
  • Metal Lids 

Empty and rinse all metal containers before recycling.

Do Not Recycle These Items Curbside

  • NO aerosol cans
  • NO wire hangers
  • NO non-food metal containers

Cartons

Recycle These Items Curbside

  • Juice, milk, and cream boxes and cartons (rinse)
  • Cereal and cracker boxes (remove liners)

Do Not Recycle These Items Curbside

  • NO waxy frozen food packaging
  • NO take-out food containers
  • NO pizza boxes

Glass

There is no curbside recycling of glass in the City residential recycling program. Residents should not put glass bottles in their recycling roll carts.

  • Plastic bags
  • Bubble wrap
  • Plastic film
  • Plastic wrap
  • 6-pack rings
  • Household garbage

  • Building materials
  • Household waste
  • Hazardous wate (electronics, batteries, paint, chemicals, oil or oil filters
  • Soiled papers (diapers, tissues, paper towels, paper plates, napkins, pizza boxes)
  • Clothes hangers
  • Chemical containers
  • Packing materials

Even though some of these items may have a recycling logo, they are not accepted by the City of New Orleans' residential recycling program.
