On July 28, 2026 Mayor Helena Moreno launched the Canal Street Renaissance Initiative, a comprehensive, cross-agency effort to restore Canal Street as a safe, vibrant, and economically thriving destination through coordinated investments in public safety, infrastructure, economic development, and cultural revitalization.
For generations, Canal Street has served as the symbolic heart of New Orleans and one of the city's most recognizable commercial corridors. The Canal Street Renaissance Initiative brings together City departments, public agencies, businesses, property owners, and community stakeholders under a unified strategy to strengthen one of New Orleans' most iconic streets.
The Canal Street Renaissance Initiative was established through Mayor Moreno's Executive Order HM-26-22, signaling her administration's commitment to making the revitalization of Canal Street a top City priority.
Initiative Priorities
The initiative is focused on delivering meaningful improvements through coordinated action, including:
- Enhancing public safety and quality of life
- Improving cleanliness and infrastructure
- Supporting local businesses and attracting new investment
- Improving mobility, traffic flow, and pedestrian safety
- Celebrating Canal Street's arts, entertainment, and cultural assets
- Expanding opportunities for residential, retail, and commercial development
- Establishing long-term governance and accountability for the corridor
A Coordinated Citywide Effort
The Canal Street Renaissance Initiative is led by the Canal Street Renaissance Director, who coordinates implementation across City departments and partner organizations while tracking progress and ensuring accountability.
The initiative will be implemented in three strategic phases. The first phase focuses on immediate operational improvements, including enhanced public safety, code enforcement, cleanliness, lighting, infrastructure, business engagement, and other quality-of-life enhancements. Future phases will build on that foundation by improving pedestrian safety and mobility, expanding arts and cultural programming, attracting new retailers and investment, activating upper-floor residential and commercial spaces, advancing major redevelopment opportunities, and establishing a sustainable governance structure for the corridor.
The City will engage stakeholders throughout implementation, provide regular updates, and publicly report on progress as the initiative moves forward.
City Planning Commission — Canal Street Study: Progress Report and Analysis of Current Issues (October 2025)
In 2024, City Council Motion No. M-24-500 directed the City Planning Commission (CPC) to reexamine key recommendations pertaining to the corridor from previous Canal Street studies, identify any ongoing or new gaps in service, ascertain what recommendations from previous studies have been implemented by the City or its partner agencies, and address any ongoing barriers to implementation.
Specifically, the Council sought updated direction to revitalize Canal Street including retail attraction, upper-floor occupancy, placemaking and walkability, multimodal transportation, landscaping, lighting, seating, public safety, wayfinding, organizational structure, and overall quality of life.
