The Department of Public Works (DPW) is comprised of five (5) divisions:

  • Engineering
  • Ground Transportation Bureau
  • Maintenance
  • One Stop
  • Parking & Towing

Not all infrastructure issues are the responsibility of the Department of Public Works. Water, sewer and drainage complaints are addressed by the Sewerage & Water Board (SWB)

Engineering 

DPW offers Construction Engineers working in the City specific guidelines to ensure they meet all City codes and standards. 

Ground Transportation Bureau

GTB oversees permitting, regulating and enforcement of vehicles and drivers operating for-hire, including taxis, pedicabs, and buses, as well as tour guides, tour planners and tour companies within the city of New Orleans. The GTB office is closed to the public so all applications for GTB are required to be submitted online.

Maintenance

The DPW Maintenance Division is responsible for filling potholes, cleaning and clearing catch basins of debris, repairing/replacing streetlight fixtures, poles, pole bases, wiring, circuitry, and junction boxes, and manages placement and maintenance of the city’s traffic signs and traffic signals. One Stop – Licenses & Permits

One Stop allows residents to apply, track, and search for permits, licenses, planning projects, and violations throughout the City of New Orleans.

Parking

The Department of Public Works/Parking Division issues tickets when parking regulations, outlined in the City of New Orleans Municipal Code, are violated. Avoid parking tickets by referencing the list of frequently violated parking regulations here.

Towing

DPW’s Parking Division is responsible for enforcement of City ordinances in regard to public safety by managing curb space (on-street parking) in certain densely populated areas. Measures include ticketing and towing violating vehicles, immobilizing vehicles, and towing abandoned vehicles. This division is also responsible for establishing and managing residential parking zones throughout the City. The City may tow cars immediately in the interest of public safety.

The Department of Public Works (DPW) addresses a variety of issues that impact the accessibility of streets and sidewalks within Orleans Parish These include providing physical accessibility features on City of New Orleans streets, a process for public accommodation requests, a means by which accommodation grievance procedures can be initiated, and tracking progress toward compliance.

The City of New Orleans today announced that starting Wednesday, April 10 at approximately 9 a.m., the Department of Public Works (DPW), in close coordination with the Louisiana Department of Transportation (LaDOTD), will close the eastbound left lane along the stretch of Interstate 610 between Canal Boulevard and Henry Thomas Drive (see map).

The City of New Orleans today reminded residents that the Department of Public Works (DPW) contractor Impetus Infrastructure, LLC will be performing a closure leading up to the intersection of Freret Street and S. Carrollton Avenue on April 4 through April 5 to accommodate the underground utility work as part of the East Carrollton Group B & C Project. During this time, South Carrollton Avenue from Burthe Street to Zimple Street will be closed to vehicular traffic.

The City of New Orleans today announced that the Department of Public Works' (DPW) contractor Fleming Construction Co, LLC will be performing temporary roadway closures on the 1500 block of Melpomene Street starting Thursday, April 4, lasting approximately two weeks, to accommodate removal of the concrete median for the Central City Group B Project.

The City of New Orleans today announced that the work scheduled to begin April 3 will now begin Thursday, April 4, weather permitting. Department of Public Works' (DPW) contractor Compliance EnviroSystems, LLC will be performing drainage assessments and cleaning on Earhart Boulevard that will require temporary lane closures on southbound Loyola Avenue and Earhart Boulevard.
