Dumpster or Storage Container Permit

A permit is required to locate a dumpster or storage container in public view in front of your property in the City of New Orleans. Depending on the details of your work, you may need other permits to comply with the building, electrical, and mechanical codes of the City.

Restrictions

In accordance with Section 146-585 of the City Code, all construction dumpsters or storage containers placed on the City’s right-of-way shall bear the name, address, and phone number of the owner of the dumpster/container. This identification shall be permanently affixed to each side of the dumpster/container with letters no less than 2 inches in height, in a color directly contrasting that of the dumpster/container. In addition, two “Type 2” safety markers (three yellow reflectors with a minimum dimension of three inches each) shall be permanently affixed upon each upper corner at each end of the dumpster/container.

Fees

  • $40 application fee 
  • Dumpsters/storage containers placed on the public right-of-way in areas not under parking meter control are subject to the charge of $10 per day for every 22 feet of space occupied.
  • Dumpsters/storage containers placed in metered locations require the rental of all occupied metered spaces

  • Apply online or complete and submit a Dumpster/Storage Container Permit Form
  • Plot Plan Including: Adjacent streets, right-of-way width of all adjacent streets, roadway width, direction of traffic, traffic control devices, any other construction in area

The Traffic Division manages the City's traffic engineering functions by maintaining and replacing pavement markings, and maintaining, replacing, installing and repairing street signs (name and directional) and traffic signals. This division is responsible for issuing street closure permits and other related permits.
