Court Reporter

Reports to:

This Court Reporter position primarily reports to one Orleans Parish Juvenile Court section.

 

DUTIES

  • Record oral testimony, examination, judicial opinions, judgments, and sentences of the Court by manual or machine shorthand.
  • Swear in parties and witnesses.
  • Read portion of transcript during trial on Judge's requests.
  • Ask speakers to clarify inaudible statements.
  • Transcribe recorded material on computer.
  • Assist with administrative duties, including handling correspondence, all necessary stenographic, and clerical duties in Judge's office.
  • Official recorder of all judicial proceedings.
  • Review all legal papers and documents pertaining to day's proceedings to ensure that such are complete and accurate.
  • Prepare Judgements
  • Interact with various people involved in court activities in a courteous manner.
  • Assist with various court operations in the assigned Section of Court
  • Perform other and related duties as assigned.

 

Court Reporter Qualifications and Skills

Because of the speed and accuracy required to capture a verbatim record and the time-sensitive nature of legal proceedings, court reporting positions may be stressful. Candidates should be prepared to work under pressure and under tight deadlines. A list of standard qualifications and skills court reporters include:

  • Strong client relationship skills.
  • Ability to maintain client confidentiality.
  • Understanding of legal compliance requirements.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Exceptional research, listening, and presentation skills.
  • Capacity to work independently from general supervision (must be self-motivated once given direction/guidance).
  • Excellent organizational skills with the ability to perform multiple tasks and obtain results working within strict time frames.
  • Ability to work independently and under pressure.

Education & Experience Requirements

  • A high school diploma
  • Successful completion of a court reporting school/training program from a recognized school/program.
  • Must hold current Court Reporter certification
