Teen Court Facilitator (Part-Time)

Teen Court is a program in which youth are sentenced by their peers for minor crimes, offenses, and/or violations. Teen Court offers an alternative to the traditional juvenile justice system and school disciplinary proceedings.
DUTIES
Assist the Teen Court Coordinator with Group Sessions Involving the Teen Court
- Receive and review referrals from Juvenile Court.
- Make initial contact with youth and parents/guardians to schedule initial interview per Coordinator's schedule.
- Interview youth and their parents or guardians.
- Recruit volunteers for Teen Court.
- Train volunteers.
- Attend all Teen Court trial sessions.
- Support, encourage, and nurture volunteers to include awarding of certificates, planning social events, and other activities related to Teen Court.
- Keep volunteers abreast of any changes in state statutes pertaining to juvenile offenders.
- Arrange for Teen Court Workshops and Trainings.
Meet with Community Organizations and Leaders
- Meet with civic leaders, social service organizations, local service agencies, school
- officials, and school student leaders regarding support and participation in Teen Court
- activities.
- Meet with school leaders regarding student bodies of middle and high school
- participation in Teen Court.
- Attend Parent-Teacher Organization meetings within Orleans Parish to promote the
- program.
- Meet with LA Bar Association and/or any other affiliate law agencies·
- County Bar Association
- Law Enforcement Personnel
- Other Potential Support Organizations
- Conduct seminars and workshops for school staff and personnel, college and university students, continuing education classes, etc.
Assist with Pre-Trial Preparations
- Prepare Teen Court forms and update them when needed.
- Prioritize Cases for Teen Court.
- Assign cases to specific times and courtrooms.
- Assign and mail cases to attorneys at least 10 days before the trial.
- Call bailiffs, clerks, judges and staff and assign them to cases
- Assign past defendants to cases
- Notify bailiff at courthouse of teen court dates
- Send out summons to attorneys, clerks, past defendant jurors, bailiffs, and jurors
- Keep track of jurors attending.
- Reschedule any cancellations concerning the attorneys, bailiff, clerk or judges
- Print new nametags.
- Prepare folders, including all appropriate paper (list what goes in folder) prior to initial interview.
- Prepare jury list (changes weekly).
- Check with Teen attorneys about availability (at least two weeks before trial) and mail
- notices.
- Prepare mailing labels and envelopes for judges, bailiffs and clerks.
- Prepare Teen Court forms and update them when needed.
- Assign meeting rooms for defendants for both pre- and post-trial.
- Prepare master schedule for records.
- Prepare paperwork for teen court trainings.
- Train volunteers for program.
Assist with the Teen Court Coordinator the Night of the Trial
- Put up courtroom signs
- If courtrooms not available, locate and set up a secondary venue for trail.
- Get judges envelopes to appropriate rooms
- Give clerks and bailiffs procedure envelopes.
- Get jury list to attorney for defendant check.
- Have clerk and bailiff meet with judges.
- Have clerk and bailiff make sure that all members for their case are present.
- Coordinate with bailiff and clerk when the session is to begin.
- Get jury list from attorney for excused jurors.
- Take attendance of participants.
- Maintain order in the jury waiting room.
- Check with jurors about conflicts (do this before each trial).
- Assign jurors to first case - do this with the clerk (do this for each trial, try to mix up jurors so the same jurors aren't together all the time).
- Distribute information to new jurors.
- Explain procedure and train the new jurors.
- Make sure courtrooms and jury room are back in order
- Collect signs after the trail.
- Collect any nametags that need to be printed from check in desk.
- Perform other duties as necessary.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK:
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university.
- Two-years of experience in Human Services.
- Knowledge of counseling techniques.
- Knowledge or principles and procedures of record keeping and repot preparation.
- Ability to work in an enthusiastic and encouraging way with at risk youth.
- Ability to work outside normal business hours is mandatory.
- Knowledge of modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment and strong computer skills.
- Ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing with Judges, supervisors, co-worder, and other departments, social service agencies, probation department and the public, including being sensitive to professional ethics, gender racial and cultural diversities, and disabilities.
- Ability to provide public access to or maintain confidentiality of Court information and records according to law.
- Ability to recognize drug and alcohol abuse symptoms.
- Ability to counsel and provide guidance to individuals and respond to situation that are of a sensitive nature.
- Analyze problems, identify alternative solutions, project consequences of proposed actions, and implement recommendations in support of goals.
- Must be organized, responsible and able to complete assignments in a timely manner.
RESPONSIBILITY:
Incumbent performs duties according to a flexible, customary routine with priorities determine by the Judges, Judicial Administrator, and service needs of the Court and public.
