City of New Orleans Announces Next Steps for MacArthur Blvd. Road Project, Other Algiers Corridors

NEW ORLEANS —The City of New Orleans announced next steps as part of the ongoing MacArthur Blvd road safety project based on community feedback and engagement. The Cantrell Administration is committed to making New Orleans’ roadways safer for people walking, bicycling, driving and riding transit with projects like Moving New Orleans Bikes.

To that end, the City is repaving roadways, fixing sidewalks, addressing road safety issues, reducing traffic congestion, as well as improving and expanding transit and bikeways and our network of “Complete Streets.” Our “Complete Streets” rely on community input and are designed and operated to enable safe use and mobility support for all users.

“Addressing traffic safety is one of the core values of my approach to transportation in the City of New Orleans, regardless of how we move around our city. We are rethinking our roadways and making them better for everyone – people walking, bicycling, driving, and riding transit. Everyone is safer because of these investments, and we will demonstrate that every single day," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell.

In the coming months, the following work will be completed on MacArthur Boulevard:

  • Reducing the number of flex posts throughout the corridor by adjusting their spacing wherever possible without compromising their safety function.
  • Adding curb reinforcement of corners at beginnings and ends of blocks.
  • Removing parking protected bike lanes where specific criteria are met. These criteria are met in the eastbound direction between Algiers Plaza and Kabel Drive, where the layout will be modified to include on-street parking and an unprotected bike lane.
  • Installing additional speed limit, bicycle and right turn yield signage along the corridor.
  • Collecting performance data on traffic volumes, speeds and crashes to assess the project impact, with a report to be published in mid-2022.

The City also announced the next steps for roadwork on other Algiers corridors, including Holiday Drive, Westbend Parkway, Mardi Gras Blvd, and Florence Drive:

  • Communicating roadway changes and construction timelines with flyers distributed to homes and posted along the streets two weeks in advance of construction.
  • Placing temporary traffic control devices such as arrow boards, barricades, cones, barrels and signage along roadways during construction.
  • Installing accessible pedestrian signals at major intersections along General DeGaulle Drive.
  • Synchronizing traffic signals along General DeGaulle Drive to optimize green indicators (minimize delays) for traffic on General DeGaulle Drive.
  • Reducing the number of flex posts throughout the corridor by adjusting their spacing wherever possible without compromising their safety function.
  • Adding curb reinforcement of corners at beginnings and ends of blocks.
