City of New Orleans Releases Americans with Disabilities Act Transition Plan Update for Public Right of Way
NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans Department of Public Words (DPW) today released the 2022 update to its Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Transition Plan for Public Rights of Way. The release follows a public process that included a public meeting in February 2022 and direct engagement of community stakeholders through the spring and summer.
“We are committed to equity for all of our residents and believe this update will move our city forward in addressing the concerns and challenges faced by those with disabilities. But we also want to emphasize that this is a living, breathing document that we can continue to streamline with ongoing feedback from the community,” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. "This is how we ensure that we are meeting residents' needs in a more inclusive, comprehensive and collaborative manner."
“Our team at DPW has been meeting regularly to make this ADA Transition Plan Update the best it can possibly be, and once again we’re coming to our residents to give us invaluable input needed to make the Plan work for everyone. We’re ready to take this vital step in a thorough process to ensure equity, accessibility and accountability for our residents with disabilities,” said Josh Hartley, Acting Director, Department of Public Works.
The Department of Public Works also updated its website to provide a more comprehensive way for the community to find accessibility resources. Along with a link to the updated Transition Plan, the website includes:
- Information about various types of accommodation requests
- An “Accessibility Dashboard” (which launched earlier in 2022) to show accessibility infrastructure and track progress throughout the city
- Frequently asked questions based on community feedback
