GRAY AND GREEN INFRASTRUCTURE HIGHLIGHTS COMPLETION OF $445K UNION STREET MAINTENANCE

Union Street Project

NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell today helped celebrate the completion of the $445,000 Union Street roadwork project.

"We are not looking back. We're only moving forward with another 10 projects in our queue," Mayor Cantrell said of the progress being made with the City's infrastructure work. "We hope to see more projects of this magnitude, particularly when we see flooding in areas that we may not have seen before."

Although this particular project was financed by City bond money, it serves as an example of the kind of gray and green infrastructure work that will be funded by the DDD millage as part of the Fair Share agreement that Mayor Cantrell led in 2019. The Department of Public Works began the maintenance project on Union Street between St. Charles Avenue and Carondelet Street on Dec. 2, 2019, in response to localized flooding. The project, which was completed last week, includes the following improvements:

  • New, upsized drainage line in the roadway
  • Pervious (allows storm water to move through) concrete parking lane with perforated pipe underneath
  • New sidewalks

For gray infrastructure, crews added two new, 15-inch drainage lines — upsized from two 12-inch lines as well as new sidewalks. For green infrastructure, crews added a pervious parking lane with a perforated pipe underneath, which literally holds water. City officials  hope to do more of this type of gray/green infrastructure in the DDD in the coming years.

Mayor Cantrell also thanked DPW Director Keith LaGrange and Project Manager Daniel Lee, as well as business owners in the area — in particular those along the corridor for their patience while the City completed this project. Mayor Cantrell also recognized maintenance contractor Hard Rock Construction for getting the work done.

Ramsey Green, Deputy CAO for Infrastructure and Chief Resilience Officer, noted that the City has more than $5.3 million in maintenance projects underway across the city. The City also projects to complete another $20 million in maintenance projects this year alone. That is in addition to the $600 million in Joint Infrastructure projects the City has planned for construction this year. Residents are encouraged to visit the RoadWork NOLA website at roadwork.nola.gov or call the construction hotline at 504.658.ROAD for information on all projects.
