Home » Mayor's Office » News » MAYOR CANTRELL ISSUES STATEMENT REGARDING BUDGET ORDINANCE NO. 33,027 — EARLY CHILDHOOD EDUCATION FU
July 16, 2020 | From City of New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS — Today, Mayor LaToya Cantrell released the following statement regarding the passage in City Council of Ordinance No. 33,027, concerning funds for City investments in early childhood education:
"We remain absolutely committed to the planned $3 million investment in early childhood education agreed upon during last fall’s budget deliberations, and to the care and support for our children and families that investment represents," said Mayor Cantrell. "Given the stark new realities we all face in light of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the significant impact it is having on City finances — the General Fund balance is under tremendous and unforeseen strain.
"The Budget Chair’s ordinance is irresponsible. It puts the City in an untenable position and places an unreasonable demand on the General Fund in the current circumstances. We look forward to working with the Council on developing alternate funding strategies, and to bringing the legislative language in line with the undeniable realities on the ground."
