Home » Mayor's Office » News » MAYOR CANTRELL RELEASES STATEMENT ON YOUTH STUDY CENTER CAPACITY AND COMPLIANCE
June 3, 2019 | From City of New Orleans
NEW ORLEANS — Mayor LaToya Cantrell today released the following statement regarding ongoing logistical challenges related to capacity at the Youth Study Center:
“As we move forward to address crimes being committed by juvenile offenders, part of what we are obligated to do is to keep a close eye on the population and the capacity at our Youth Study Center,” said Mayor Cantrell. “In that regard, I am calling for accountability across the board. All of our related agencies and departments have a role to play, and all of us have to lean forward and take this seriously. That means moving quickly to transfer offenders being indicted as adults to a more appropriate facility, and it means making sure all of the resources we have for juvenile offenders — including those charged with representing them — are put into place quickly and efficiently.”
“The capacity for the YSC is 48 beds. As we make arrests and bring juveniles into custody, we will be vigilant and responsible with how we activate resources across agencies to provide for them appropriately — and to keep the public safe.”
