New Orleans Health Department Launches Sound Check

NEW ORLEANS – Today, the New Orleans Health Department will launch a public health education initiative called Sound Check, which aims to reduce the level of harmful sounds that can adversely affect public health. Sound Check will engage residents, businesses, workers, performers and visitors to protect the overall health of the entire community.

NEW ORLEANS – The City of New Orleans is in the process of updating its Hazard Mitigation Plan, which provides a detailed overview of the risks that the City faces from hurricanes and other storms events, chemical spills, etc., as well as outlines the strategies to reduce the effects of those hazards on people and property.

Amicus Brief Filed by State Civic Groups Says Contempt Judgment Defies Separation of Powers Doctrine

NEW ORLEANS – Three major civic groups in Louisiana last week filed an amicus curiae brief with the Louisiana Supreme Court arguing that the Civil District Court’s contempt citation requiring the house arrest of Mayor Mitch Landrieu was a “clear violation of the separation of powers” and would have significant impact on laws across Louisiana.

Filming Notice for Residents in Algiers

NEW ORLEANS – Today, the Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy issued a filming notice to residents in the Algiers neighborhood for Thursday, Sept. 17, 2015. A production company will film exterior scenes on the 1200 block of Opelousas Avenue between Atlantic Avenue and Thayer Street. As a result, the eastbound side of the specified street will close from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m.

City's NOLA FOR LIFE Midnight Basketball Reaches Milestone

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans’ Midnight Basketball season nine ended on September 12, 2015, with a total of more than 650 participants and 340 spectators. Midnight Basketball provides safe recreational opportunities in crime hot spots for young men through the game of basketball. Mentorship and educational support are also key components of this initiative.

Mayor Landrieu Statement on Passing of Dr. Calvin Moret

NEW ORLEANS – Mayor Mitch Landrieu issued the following statement on the passing of Dr. Calvin Moret: 

"We have lost a national hero with the passing of Dr. Calvin Moret, the last living Tuskegee Airman in Louisiana. Dr. Moret was a great leader who made incredible sacrifices and exhibited resounding courage. He was truly an ambassador for the city of New Orleans. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this difficult time."

Mayor Landrieu Statement on House Arrest Stay Issued by State Supreme Court

NEW ORLEANS – Mayor Mitch Landrieu made the following remarks after the Louisiana Supreme Court today stayed a house arrest order by Civil District Judge Kern Reese while the City appeals a contempt of court judgment issued by Judge Reese.

Saturday is Final Night for 'NOLA FOR LIFE' Midnight Basketball Season Nine

NEW ORLEANS — On Saturday, the City of New Orleans, the New Orleans Pelicans and PlayNola will close the ninth season of NOLA FOR LIFE Midnight Basketball. The team who wins the most tournaments of the season will win a $1,000 grand prize. In addition, all participants will receive New Orleans Pelicans swag.

New Orleans Medical Reserve Corps Receives FEMA Award for Community Preparedness

NEW ORLEANS — This week, the New Orleans Medical Reserve Corps (NOMRC), a volunteer extension of the New Orleans Health Department, was awarded the “Outstanding Citizen Corps Partner Program Award” at the 2015 Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Individual and Community Preparedness Awards.  The awards are designed to recognize outstanding individuals, programs and organizations that are dedicated to preparing their communities for emergencies.
