City of New Orleans Mosquito and Termite Control Board advises residents of elevated mosquito numbers

June 11, 2012

NEW ORLEANS, LA — The City of New Orleans Mosquito and Termite Control Board has detected an elevated number of mosquitoes in the area, including Culex quinquefasciatus, the “southern house mosquito”, the primary vector of West Nile virus.

The Mosquito Control Board has responded by applying insecticides targeting mosquito larvae and adults. Adult mosquitoes are being treated by fog trucks and by airplane. The City will continue these operations throughout the summer, but reminds the residents of New Orleans to protect themselves from the West Nile virus by reducing the number of mosquitoes around their homes.

It is important to drain standing water.  Residents should:

Empty water from any containers that cannot be removed including bird baths, flower pots, pet food and water dishes, and swimming pool covers, at least once week;

  • Make sure pools and fountains are operational and circulating;
  • Remove trash and clutter, including discarded tires and other items that could collect water;
  • And check for clogged rain gutters and remove any leaf litter that can prevent draining.

If water is stagnant, residents are encouraged to contact the Mosquito Control Board.

Residents are reminded to apply mosquito repellant to protect themselves, particularly after dark, when mosquitoes are most active.
