City issues uptown traffic notice

July 27, 2012

NEW ORLEANS, LA— On Monday, June 30, 2012, at approximately 9:00AM, the segment of Belfast Street between Lowerline Street and South Carrollton Avenue in Uptown New Orleans will be converted from its current two-way directional operation to one-way operation in the Uptown bound direction (from Lowerline Street to South Carrollton Avenue) for a six month trial basis. This modification will be enacted to alleviate residents’ concerns about the width of the street and its ability to handle two-way traffic and parking safely.  During this six month trial basis, the City of New Orleans’ Department of Public Works will monitor the effects of the change before a final determination is made.

In response to a request from a nearby resident, and after a formal review by the Department of Public Works, it was determined that the roadway may be too narrow for two-way traffic and parking on both side of the street.

A survey was mailed to nearby residents asking for feedback on the proposed traffic change.  A majority of the returned surveys were in favor of the change to one-way traffic.  In order to improve traffic flow in this neighborhood, the Department of Public Works will now post signs designating this segment of road as one-way and also post “Do Not Enter” signs to prevent drivers from accessing Belfast Street from South Carrollton Avenue.

Questions about this project may be directed to the Department of Public Works at (504) 658-8046.
