Mayor Landrieu invites residents to join in NOLA FOR LIFE Volunteer Day

October 31, 2012

NEW ORLEANS, LA-- Today, Mayor Mitch Landrieu announced plans for the second “NOLA FOR LIFE Volunteer Day,” inviting all local residents to join him in this effort to revitalize East Shore Playground and the Little Woods Neighborhood. The NOLA FOR LIFE Volunteer Day is taking place on Saturday November 10, 2012.

“As part of our NOLA FOR LIFE comprehensive murder reduction strategy, we’re asking residents to get engaged and get involved, because we cannot end this cycle of violence alone,” said Mayor Mitch Landrieu. “The Volunteer Day takes the fight to the street by going into some of the city’s most challenging areas to improve the quality of life and increase public safety. Together, we will pick up trash and debris, paint, and make other improvements that can make a real difference in our neighborhoods.”

The first NOLA FOR LIFE Volunteer Day took place July 14, 2012 at Taylor Playground in the Hoffman Triangle neighborhood of Central City and Hardin Playground in the Seventh Ward. Those interested in joining the November 10 effort can sign up at

Volunteer activities will include improvements to the park and neighborhood beautification. Volunteers are advised to dress for the weather and to wear closed-toe shoes. Supplies will be provided, as will refreshments.

In addition to the volunteer activities, the City is sending teams of workers to the neighborhood to address safety and quality of life issues, such as broken street lights, overgrown lots and illegal dumping.

The five pillars of the NOLA FOR LIFE plan are:

  • Stop the Shootings
  • Invest in Prevention
  • Promote Jobs and Opportunity
  • Get Involved and Rebuild Neighborhoods
  • Improve the NOPD

“By getting involved and helping fellow citizens reclaim their neighborhoods, people from all walks of life can help curb the unnatural violence in our City,” Mayor Landrieu said.
