Season Sixteen of NOLA FOR LIFE Midnight Basketball Continues

November 10, 2017

NEW ORLEANS — On Saturday, Nov. 11, 2017, the City of New Orleans along with the New Orleans Pelicans, Domino’s Pizza, PlayNOLA and DJ Wild Wayne will continue the sixteenth season of NOLA FOR LIFE Midnight Basketball, which provides safe recreational activity, jobs and opportunities in crime hot spots for young people 16 years and older through basketball, mentorship and support.

The season is being hosted at Rosenwald Recreation Center (1120 S. Broad St.). Tournament play will be held every Saturday night through Dec. 9, with the exception of Nov. 25 in observance of Thanksgiving, from 8 p.m. to midnight.

In partnership with the National Basketball Players Association Foundation (NBPA Foundation), the City is offering Midnight Basketball scholarships to participants to attend industry-certified job training programs in New Orleans. Interested players are encouraged to visit the JOB1 table at Midnight Basketball to apply. The deadline for application is November 18. For more information on the Midnight Basketball scholarships, click here.

Each week, Midnight Basketball features a speaker who encourages participants to pursue success in various parts of their lives. During tomorrow’s tournament, participants will hear from Elder Brandon Boutin from Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church (5600 Read Blvd.). Tournament winners will receive a Domino’s Pizza Gift Card and NBA shirts and socks.

Resource providers will be JOB1 Business and Career Solutions and STRIVE Future Leaders. JOB1 Business and Career Solutions is part of a network of workforce partners that provides services to various job seeker populations and employers. STRIVE Future Leaders supports young adults between the ages of 18–24 who have been involved in the justice system. The program provides participants with case management services, post-secondary education opportunities, occupational skills training, service learning projects, paid internships, education placement assistance and job readiness training.

Local role model and radio personality DJ Wild Wayne, who plays an essential role in NOLA FOR LIFE efforts by lending his media presence every week, will host the evening’s tournament.

NOLA FOR LIFE Midnight Basketball is a part of Mayor Landrieu’s comprehensive NOLA FOR LIFE strategy to reduce murders in New Orleans. Midnight Basketball aims to reach young men who are most likely at risk for being victims of or contributors to violent crime in the city. Since its launch in January 2012, the program has given over 13,000 participants access to jobs, job training, education and other resources.

Launched in May 2012, NOLA FOR LIFE is New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu's comprehensive strategy to tackle the city's historically high murder rate. Recognizing that law enforcement alone cannot solve the murder problem, NOLA FOR LIFE takes a holistic approach to get to the root of the problem and implements initiatives in five main categories: Stop the Shooting, Invest in Prevention, Promote Jobs and Opportunity, Strengthen the NOPD and Get Involved and Rebuild Neighborhoods. In the five years since NOLA FOR LIFE launched, there has been a 25% reduction in murder rate. In June 2016, the City of New Orleans released the NOLA FOR LIFE 2016 Four-Year Progress Report, which details why certain initiatives were selected, who they are reaching and the results they have produced. Click here to view the Progress Report.
