Home » Code Enforcement » Programs » Chapter 66 Lot Abatement Program
The Chapter 66 Program is designed to abate lots in violation of the city ordinance. According to Article V, it is
Vacant lots can easily become overgrown throughout the year. During a New Orleans summer, the combination of moisture and heat can cause weeds and grass to grow more quickly. We encourage citizens to keep their properties compliant with Chapter 66 program by regularly mowing or trimming lawns and lots.
A goal of the Chapter 66 program is to help abate overly grown vacant lots. The Department of Code Enforcement may abate lawns of occupied properties if the owner fails to comply with ordinance codes.
To report a lot needing abatement, call 311 or submit a 311 request online.
The Department of Code Enforcement utilizes the Chapter 66 program to keep vacant and undermaintained lots compliant. A healthy, maintained lawn is essential for public safety and health in New Orleans. We aim to make the most productive impact in our communities and keep citizens informed. Some questions we are often asked:
What is considered an "overgrown" lot? An overgrown lot is one where grass and weed plants exceed 10 inches in height.

Does the City cut any lot? Unfortunately, no. Lot maintenance is important in keeping our community, our city, and ourselves healthy and safe. If you are a property owner or tenant, it should be a top priority to ensure your property is free of excessive weeds and grass. Sometimes, if a lot is vacant or is simply not maintained, the Department of Code Enforcement will abate the lot by cutting the grass. The city relies on community members to stay diligent and report excessively overgrown lots to 311.

How does the City decide where to cut? Through the Chapter 66 Grass Cutting program, the City aims to abate vacant lots in areas near schools, community buildings, parks, and other public facilities.

Is there a timeframe for when a lot will be abated? No. The City works with available resources and personnel to cut overgrown lots in a timely and regular manner. We partner with vendors across the area to ensure overgrown lots are appropriately abated. Because abatement efforts are team-driven and are dependent on factors like weather and public safety, a highly regimented timeframe is impractical.
