The Neighborhood Cares Initiative (NCI) is a new program, launched in 2022, that delivers resources and brings focused attention to a specific New Orleans neighborhood, culminating in an in-person event. These one-day Saturday events include a combination of three activities: clean-ups, giveaways, and resource fairs.
The Mayor’s Neighborhood Engagement Office (NEO) works with neighborhood leaders to identify which activities are most helpful to their community. Join NEO, residents, churches, schools, and businesses as we host community events in an effort to rejuvenate our neighborhoods and playgrounds!

On Saturday, October 18th, the City of New Orleans Neighborhood Engagement Office (NEO) proudly wrapped up the final Neighborhood Cares Initiative Community Day of 2025 in Edgewood Heights with a day full of community spirit and hard work. More than 40 volunteers came together to refresh the Edgewood Heights Community Garden, painting throughout the garden and planting over 50 vibrant flowers. Volunteers also helped beautify the neighborhood, collecting more than 30 bags of trash.
City departments made a major impact, filling 85 potholes, cleaning over 70 catch basins and lateral lines, clearing more than 25 manholes, and removing dumping sites throughout the area.
At the resource fair, city agencies connected with residents and shared helpful information and resources. Residents enjoyed free food, snowballs, and music, while Walgreens provided free flu vaccinations.
The City of New Orleans Neighborhood Engagement Office was proud to partner with Mayor LaToya Cantrell, District D Councilmember Eugene Green, Smiley’s Grill New Orleans, Happy Discount, Chick-Fil-A, Pee Wee’s Crabcakes, Sherwin Williams, Lamar Advertising, Walgreens and The Salvation Army.
A heartfelt thank you goes out to all our volunteers, sponsors, partners, the City of New Orleans Property Management Department and the New Orleans Police Department for their dedication and teamwork in making this event a success!
