Purpose

The Arts Council of New Orleans is a private, non-profit organization designated as the City’s official arts agency. The Arts Council serves as one of eight regional distributing agencies for state arts funds and administers available municipal arts grants and the Percent for Art program for the City of New Orleans.

The purpose of the Council is to plan, create, encourage, promote, nurture and produce cultural and arts activities in the City of New Orleans; to advocate and promote the improvement of the social and economic environment for the individual artists and arts organizations; to provide City government with services and citizen participation in support of the City government’s role in the arts, including advice to the Mayor and to other public officials and bodies on matters concerning the arts; to demonstrate concern for the physical environment of the City; to build support and constituency for the arts; and to interpret through educational means the activities of individual artists and cultural organizations to the general public.

Composition

Not more than thirty-two members.

  • The Mayor appoints half of the members from a slate of candidates submitted by the Nominating Committee; and
  • The board elects half of the members.
