Purpose

The Southeast Louisiana Flood Protection Authority – West is one of two levee authorities serving metropolitan New Orleans. It provides flood protection for nearly all land on the west bank of the Mississippi River in Jefferson and Orleans parishes by building, operating and maintaining flood control systems.

Composition

The governor appoints seven members from nominations submitted by the nominating committee as follows:

• Three members are engineers or professionals in a related field such as geotechnical, hydrological, or environmental science. At least one is a civil engineer;
• Three members are professionals in a discipline other than those mentioned previously with at least ten years of professional experience in that discipline; and
• One member who possesses one of the above qualifications.

Term Length

Four years.
