NEW ORLEANS - As Louisiana continues to face some of the highest rates of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), the New Orleans Office of Health and Human Services (NOHHS) is encouraging residents and health care providers to learn about doxycycline postexposure prophylaxis (doxy PEP). This evidence-based strategy can help reduce the risk of certain bacterial STIs after a potential exposure. To support the community and strengthen local prevention efforts, NOHHS is releasing a doxy PEP guidance designed to help both residents and providers understand how doxy PEP works, who may benefit from it, and how it can be used as part of routine sexual health care. This resource aims to make conversations about doxy PEP easier, improve access to the medication, and contribute to lowering STI rates in New Orleans.

Powered by the energy and expertise of hundreds of community partners, the report shows how public agencies, healthcare providers, nonprofits, educators, and residents joined forces to take on some of New Orleans’ toughest health challenges together.

New Orleans Mobile Crisis Intervention Unit (MCIU) dispatches mental health professionals who de-escalate, assess, stabilize, and connect residents to care right in the community, often avoiding hospitalization entirely. This team has been able to operate as the fourth arm of the City’s first responder system to provide rapid response to behavioral health calls where weapons or violence are not involved.

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Department of Health and Human Services, in partnership with March of Dimes, announces the expansion of its preeclampsia awareness campaign, “Take It Easy, Baby!”. Designed to combat one of the leading causes of maternal and infant mortality and morbidity, the campaign continues to increase awareness about the signs and symptoms of preeclampsia in Orleans Parish. A new provider education component of the campaign is now available to educate healthcare professionals on the benefits of low dose aspirin.

NEW ORLEANS — The New Orleans Department of Health and Human Services released its 2025 Annual Opioid Report, revealing a 4% decrease in accidental overdose deaths across Orleans Parish compared to 2024, building on a significant downward trend that began in 2023. While this decline—from 293 to 282 fatalities—marks continued progress, the report underscores that overdose deaths remain significantly higher than pre‑pandemic levels.
