Mayor LaToya Cantrell

On May 7, 2018, LaToya Cantrell made history as New Orleans’ first woman mayor in its 300-year history. After that historic victory, Mayor Cantrell was inaugurated to a second term on January 10, 2022. Her passion for the City of Yes and her dedication to its residents remains stronger than ever.  

In her first term as Mayor, the Cantrell Administration was pivotal in negotiations to pass Fair Share legislation, securing $200M over five years for infrastructure, as well as getting voter approval in 2019 for a Short-Term Rental Visitors Tax and $500M Bond Authorization. In 2020, she also became laser-focused on protecting the public health and safety of the city’s residents throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as demonstrating first-hand her commitment to creating a more equitable and safer New Orleans for all residents. 

In 2021, the City of New Orleans, under Mayor Cantrell's leadership, achieved a critical milestone in selecting a developer for the former Six Flags site in New Orleans East, which has sat dormant for over 16 years as a result of Hurricane Katrina. This symbolized the administration's larger approach to leveraging City-owned assets and creating a more equitable and vibrant economy for all New Orleans residents and businesses. 

As she begins her second term, Mayor Cantrell remains focused on the issues of public safety, infrastructure, affordable housing and improving the quality of life for all New Orleans residents.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Temporary Street Closures to Begin in French Quarter

The City of New Orleans announced that, effective immediately, the Department of Public Works (DPW) contractor, Boh Bros Construction Co., LLC, will begin temporary closures on various streets in the French Quarter to perform mill and overlay operations. Project completion is expected by February 2025, weather permitting. Construction will typically occur Monday through Friday, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Streets will reopen each evening to vehicular traffic.

Traffic Advisory: I-10 Westbound Right Lane and Poydras Street On-Ramp Closure for Lighting Repairs

The City of New Orleans today announced that starting Saturday, December 6, 2024, the Department of Public Works (DPW), in close coordination with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LaDOTD), will close the right lane of westbound I-10 between Gravier Street and the Broad Street Overpass. In addition, the I-10 on-ramp from Poydras Street will be closed from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Regift Your Christmas Trees to the Wetlands: Participate in the Annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program!

The City of New Orleans today reminded residents of the annual Christmas Tree Recycling Program to restore our wetlands. For over 26 years, this program has contributed to the restoration of the Bayou Sauvage Urban National Wildlife Refuge, while also preventing them from being placed in landfills. Thanks to residents who participate in the program each year, recycled trees have restored an area of marsh equal to approximately 200 football fields. The trees also create an important habitat for birds, fish, crabs, crawfish and shrimp.

The City of New Orleans, United Way of Southeast Louisiana (UWSELA) and Verizon announced the integration of Hyfi flood sensor data onto Streetwise, giving residents the ability to see what parts of the city are experiencing flooding during a weather event in real time.

***UPDATE** CITY OF NEW ORLEANS CELEBRATES SIGNING OF HISTORIC AGREEMENT AND EXECUTIVE ORDER FOR THE REDEVELOPMENT OF LOUIS ARMSTRONG PARK AND MUNICIPAL AUDITORIUM

Today, Mayor LaToya Cantrell signed a five-year Cooperative Endeavor Agreement between the City of New Orleans and Save Our Soul Coalition (S.O.S.C.) to support the redevelopment process for Louis Amstrong Park and Municipal Auditorium. Additionally, Mayor Cantrell issued an Executive Order to establish a Municipal Auditorium and Armstrong Park Revitalization Advisory Committee. The nine-member committee comprised of community members will advise and provide counsel to the Mayor and City Council regarding the development of a Strategic Master Plan for Louis Armstrong Park and Municipal Auditorium.

The City of New Orleans today announced that it will activate the Citywide Freeze Plan (CFP) overnight Thursday, Dec. 5 in anticipation of cold weather.
