Mayor LaToya Cantrell

On May 7, 2018, LaToya Cantrell made history as New Orleans’ first woman mayor in its 300-year history. After that historic victory, Mayor Cantrell was inaugurated to a second term on January 10, 2022. Her passion for the City of Yes and her dedication to its residents remains stronger than ever.  

In her first term as Mayor, the Cantrell Administration was pivotal in negotiations to pass Fair Share legislation, securing $200M over five years for infrastructure, as well as getting voter approval in 2019 for a Short-Term Rental Visitors Tax and $500M Bond Authorization. In 2020, she also became laser-focused on protecting the public health and safety of the city’s residents throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as demonstrating first-hand her commitment to creating a more equitable and safer New Orleans for all residents. 

In 2021, the City of New Orleans, under Mayor Cantrell's leadership, achieved a critical milestone in selecting a developer for the former Six Flags site in New Orleans East, which has sat dormant for over 16 years as a result of Hurricane Katrina. This symbolized the administration's larger approach to leveraging City-owned assets and creating a more equitable and vibrant economy for all New Orleans residents and businesses. 

As she begins her second term, Mayor Cantrell remains focused on the issues of public safety, infrastructure, affordable housing and improving the quality of life for all New Orleans residents.

CITY, NOPD ADVANCES PUBLIC SAFETY MODERNIZATION WITH MARK43 DEPLOYMENT

The New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) has taken a major step in modernizing law enforcement operations with the full deployment of the Mark43 Platform. This deployment marks the completion of a milestone modernization initiative that now equips more than 1,400 sworn officers across NOPD and 18 external agencies with a cloud-native Records Management System and Analytics solution. The Mayor’s Office of Cultural Economy (OCE) has announced a temporary pause of the Cultural Economy Funding Program for the Fiscal Year 2026 Grant Cycle. The decision comes amid ongoing Citywide budget constraints and impending budget cuts for 2026.

TRAFFIC ADVISORY: TEMPORARY LANE CLOSURES OF EASTBOUND LANES OF OLD GENTILLY ROAD (LOUISA ST TO DESIRE PKWY)

The City of New Orleans Department of Public Works (DPW) announces that starting Monday, Nov. 11 at 7 a.m., there will be full lane closures to all through traffic in Eastbound lanes of Old Gentilly Road,  within the current construction footprint running from Louisa Street to Desire Parkway. These full lane closures are expected to last from 7 a.m.– 5:30 p.m. to allow SWBNO to complete waterline repairs. These waterline repairs are needed to complete the concrete panel replacements already underway.  After SWBNO water work is completed, traffic will resume the construction traffic pattern that was in place to complete the roadway work.

The City of New Orleans and the New Orleans Recreation Development (NORD) Commission celebrated the completion of major facility upgrades at Wesley Barrow Stadium, representing a total investment of $1,417,892 in City Bonds and State Capital Outlay funds secured through Senator Jimmy Harris.
