CITY OF NEW ORLEANS CELEBRATES COMPLETION OF $12 MILLION POYDRAS STREET IMPROVEMENT PROJECT

The City of New Orleans Department of Public Works (DPW), in partnership with the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development (LaDOTD) and the Sewage and Water Board of New Orleans (SWBNO), today celebrated the completion of the $12 million roadway improvement project on Poydras Street bounded by Claiborne Ave. to Liberty Street and Convention Center Blvd to Loyola Ave.

“Poydras Street is one of the vital arteries of New Orleans, connecting residents and visitors to the heart of our city.” said Mayor LaToya Cantrell. “These repairs strengthen our infrastructure, making the area safer and more accessible for all. This project will significantly ease maneuvering around the city by improving traffic flow, reducing congestion, and providing safer, smoother routes for drivers, cyclist, and pedestrians alike."

“The completion of the Poydras Street infrastructure improvement project marks the beginning of many exciting infrastructure improvements in the Central Business District, French Quarter, Marigny, and Bywater,” said Rick Hathaway, Director of the Department of Public Works. “With street resurfacing, new bike lanes, high-visibility crosswalks, ADA-compliant ramps, and sidewalk repairs at various locations, these projects will provide lasting benefits to the city for years to come. We are excited for the future improvements in these areas and would like to thank our partners at the state, Parks and Parkways, and the Sewerage and Water Board for working with us to transform New Orleans and build a resilient, inclusive city.”

The project, funded by City Bonds, marks a significant enhancement to the Central Business District and the city as a whole in preparations for the Super Bowl LIX. The Poydras Street Project is one of the 32 projects ongoing developments in this area, reflecting the Cantrell Administration’s dedication to fostering thriving communities for generations to come.

"As we prepare for major sporting and cultural events, this project underscores our readiness to welcome hundreds of thousands of fans, players, and visitors from across the world and I look forward to accomplishing more together," said Councilmember Leslie Harris, District B.

The project includes street resurfacing work, repaved roadways, various sidewalk replacements, driveway repairs, patching, milling, drainage upgrades, and the installation of Americans with Disability Act (ADA) -compliant curb ramps at intersections. Additionally, the project includes new bike lanes between Loyola Ave. and Convention Center Blvd.

A new bike lane was added in both directions on Poydras St., between Loyola Ave. and Convention Center Blvd. Additionally, a river bound bike lane was installed between S. Liberty and Loyola. The project, developed by Hard Rock L.L.C., commenced in May 2024 and was completed in December 2024.

Since May 2018, DPW has completed 219 projects at an estimated value of $1.16 billion. Today, 35 roadwork projects are under construction at an estimated value of nearly $521 million.
