TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURE: THE 800, 900, AND 1000 BLOCKS OF ORANGE STREET

On Wednesday, Oct. 1, weather permitting, the Office of Resilience & Sustainability’s contractor, RNGD Infrastructure, LLC, will implement a temporary road closure to  800, 900, and 1000 blocks of Orange Street between Magazine Street and Constance Street to begin drainage and roadway repairs for the DPS01 Watershed (Broadmoor HMGP) Drainage Upgrades and Green Infrastructure Project (Phase I).

Current Work

Crews are actively installing a new waterline and are currently working at the Constance Street intersection. Orange Street will be closed to thru traffic from Magazine to Annunciation. The waterline installation is anticipated to be complete by the end of next week.

Once waterline installation is complete, crews will begin testing the new line. While testing is underway, the contractor will install the sewer line between Magazine and Constance. After the waterline passes testing, tie-ins will be performed, houses will be connected to the new line, and the existing waterline will be abandoned. Drainage work will then begin.

Traffic Detours & Local Access

The temporary road closure will remain in effect until Saturday, February 28, 2026.  Traffic on Orange Street will be detoured to Race Street to access Magazine Street or Richard Street to access Tchoupitoulas Street. Local traffic access on Orange Street will be maintained as much as possible throughout construction. Crews plan to work continuously along Orange Street to restore the roadway as quickly as possible; however, progress will depend on successful waterline testing. Work hours are Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. until sunset.

About the Project

The DPS 01 Watershed Drainage Upgrades and Green Infrastructure project is a two-phased implementation approach to reduce flooding, particularly in the Broadmoor and Central City neighborhoods, and implement green infrastructure (GI) features in the stormwater drainage system to reduce runoff and create and enhance public landscape and park amenities. This will be accomplished by upgrading the City’s stormwater drainage infrastructure to include stormwater detention features, infiltration, and landscape features along with street upgrades.
