The City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board to Conduct Larval Mosquito Abatement Tonight by Truck
The City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite, and Rodent Control Board (NOMTRCB) will conduct larval mosquito abatement by truck tonight, targeting the larval stages of mosquitoes to prevent them from developing into adults. Truck treatments will take place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., weather permitting, in the following area:
- Lower 9th Ward and Holy Cross bounded by Florida Ave., N. Peters St., Sister St., & Delery St.
Recent heavy rainfall has led to water pooling in containers, marshy areas, and low-lying plains, creating ideal habitats for mosquitoes to lay their eggs. Mosquitoes can develop from eggs to adult mosquitoes in as little as seven days.
NOMTRCB urges residents to remain vigilant and take the following steps to help reduce mosquitos around your home:
- Tip over or toss out any items that hold water to prevent mosquito breeding.
- In containers that cannot be removed (such as bird baths, sugar kettles, pools, and ponds), aerate them if possible, or drain and replace water weekly and scrub the sides to remove mosquito eggs. You can also stock them with mosquitofish or mosquito dunks.
- Screen rain barrels and other water collection devices with a fine mesh and a tight lid, and use collected water within one week.
- Take 10 minutes each week to inspect your property for standing water, especially when taking out the garbage.
As we approach the peak mosquito season, NOMTRCB also encourages citizens to take protective measures to reduce exposure:
- Limit outdoor activities between dusk and dawn when mosquitoes are most active.
- Use air conditioning or sit in the air stream of a fan when possible.
- Ensure window and door screens are in good condition to keep mosquitoes out of your home.
- Use repellents containing EPA-registered active ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus. Always follow product instructions when using repellents.
