TRAFFIC ADVISORY: Temporary Lane Closures on Carondelet Street and St. Charles Avenue for Roadway Repairs Along Streetcar Tracks
Beginning Monday, April 14, the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works (DPW) contractor, Barriere Construction Co., LLC will implement temporary lane closures on St. Charles Avenue and Carondelet Street in the Central Business District to remove asphalt surrounding the streetcar tracks and replace it with concrete. Construction activities will generally occur between 7 a.m. and 5:30 p.m. at the following locations:
- Charles Avenue (Canal Street to Poydras Street)
- Carondelet Street (Common Street to Canal Street)
Construction will begin at Canal Street on St. Charles Avenue and at Common Street on Carondelet Street, progressing through each corridor.
During working hours, both travel lanes will be closed. One lane of vehicular traffic will be maintained by shifting vehicles to the parking lane. Outside of working hours, the left travel lane will reopen. No parking will be allowed on either side of the street within the work zones at any time during construction.
For the first two to three days of construction, lane closures will be in place along the full project limits to accommodate asphalt saw-cutting. After this initial phase, lane closures will be limited to a maximum of two blocks at a time on St. Charles Avenue as crews progress through each section. These closures will be in effect 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, throughout the duration of the project.
As work reaches intersections, half of each intersection will be temporarily closed, but only while crews are actively working in that specific area.
The overall project is expected to last approximately five weeks, with work on Carondelet Street anticipated to be completed in one week.
Safety is our top priority. Traffic control devices, such as cones, barricades, and signage, will be set up to safely guide both vehicles and pedestrians around the work zones. “No Parking/Tow Away Zone” signs will be posted in active construction areas.
Please note construction schedules are subject to change due to factors such as weather, equipment delays, unforeseen field conditions, utility conflicts, or crew availability.
