City of New Orleans Hosts Ribbon Cutting Ceremony to Celebrate DeSaix Boulevard Bridge Improvement Project Completion

NEW ORLEANS – Today, Mayor LaToya Cantrell and the City of New Orleans Department of Public Works (DPW) was joined by Deputy CAO for Infrastructure Joe Threat, Councilmember Eugene Green of District D, and President of the DeSaix Neighborhood Association Hannah Ligon, along with community leaders to celebrate the completion of the DeSaix Boulevard/Bayou St. John Bridge Improvement Project.

"After more than 80 years of connecting City Council Districts A and D, today's ribbon cutting ceremony marks the restoration of pedestrian access to the Wisner Bridge, enhancing mobility and providing new recreational opportunities for residents," said Mayor LaToya Cantrell.  "This $6 million project was funded by City bonds approved by the residents of New Orleans, which makes these types of investments possible. Thank you to all of our partners for prioritizing improvements to our communities and for their unwavering commitment in making our City stronger together."

The scope of work for the DeSaix Boulevard Bridge Improvement Project included the full reconstruction of the bridge, new lighting, the resurfacing of Moss Street, and enhanced walking and biking connections to the Wisner Trail and City Park. These upgrades aimed to provide safer and more convenient mobility options for residents and visitors while strengthening the connections between neighborhoods, parks, and trails. Neel-Schaffer, Inc. designed the project, which was constructed by RNGD Construction, LLC.

"I'm supportive of the building of infrastructure in our city. This is a City that's moving in the right direction in many respects," said Councilmember Eugene Green. "Today is an example of that. I'm looking forward to seeing work like this continue to happen in District D."

"This project represents a significant investment in critical infrastructure for our residents," said Rick Hathaway, Director of the Department of Public Works. "The new DeSaix Boulevard Bridge not only improves safety and mobility, but also strengthens the connections between our neighborhoods, parks, and trails. We are committed to delivering projects that enhance the quality of life for everyone in New Orleans."
