City Invites Residents to Vote on the Name of New Municipal ID Card

NEW ORLEANS – City of New Orleans residents are invited to help shape the identity of the City's new Municipal Identification (ID) Program by voting for its official name. Starting today, Tuesday, Jan. 28, community members can cast their vote on the Mayor’s Office of Human Rights & Equity (OHRE) Instagram page, @EquityRightsNOLA, through Instagram polls. Residents can vote for one of the three proposed names: Crescent City ID, City of New Orleans ID, or New Orleans City ID. Each name reflects the inclusivity, accessibility, and spirit of New Orleans.

The Municipal ID Program will offer all New Orleans residents a secure form of identification, promoting inclusion, ensuring equitable access to City services and opportunities, and supporting the growth and vitality of our local economy.

“The City is committed to creating an ID card that represents the pride, diversity, and vibrancy of our community,” said Kahlida Lloyd, Director of OHRE. “The Municipal ID Card is a pivotal step toward advancing equity and enhancing the quality of life for all residents. This card will empower individuals by providing access to vital City resources, encourage participation in the local economy for those who already have identification, and foster a stronger sense of inclusion and belonging. We’re excited to have our communities actively shape this initiative by helping to choose its name.”

The Municipal ID Program is being led by Daisy Reyes Cabral, Municipal ID Program Manager, who emphasized the importance of public input: “This card is for the people of New Orleans, and it should reflect the voices of the community. By voting, residents are helping us shape a program that truly belongs to everyone," said Cabral.

What’s Next?

While the Municipal ID is not yet available, today’s launch of the naming process marks an important milestone in its development. In the coming months, the program team will continue working to finalize the card’s design, establish application guidelines, and collaborate with local organizations to ensure widespread accessibility. Additionally, the City will partner with local businesses to develop a comprehensive discount program for cardholders, offering exclusive benefits at participating establishments and fostering stronger connections between the program and the local economy.

Residents are encouraged to visit the City’s Instagram page, @EquityRightsNOLA, today to cast their vote. Voting will remain open until midnight, Monday, Feb. 3. The winning name will be announced on Tuesday, Feb. 4 on OHRE’s Instagram page.
