New Orleans Recreation Development Commission, Office of Workforce Development and Mayor’s Office of Youth and Families Announces Details of Youth Summer Programs

NEW ORLEANS — This week, the New Orleans Recreation Development (NORD) Commission, in partnership with the City of New Orleans Office of Workforce Development and Mayor’s Office of Youth and Families announced the upcoming youth summer programming. Opportunities will be available in all five City Council Districts through NORD and JOB1 NOLA Youth Works. In total, the City has committed more than $2 million to youth summer programming this year.   

JOB1 NOLA Youth Works and NORD will host the Mayor’s 2024 Summer Youth Employment Program to employ or provide stipends to more than 2,000 young people ages 13-24. This is part of a robust package of summer opportunities available annually to New Orleans’ youth, teens and young adults. 

Additionally, NORD is offering 21 youth summer camps that will serve 1,600 kids ages 4-12 across the city through partnerships with schools, non-profits and faith-based organizations. The summer camps will offer a wide range of academic, cultural and recreational activities, including field trips to the Audubon Zoo, the Aquarium of the Americas and NORD pools for water-safety lessons. NORD Teen Career Camps and JOB1 NOLA Youth Works Opportunities 

NORD offers Teen Career Camps for youth ages 13-15 to gain valuable experience and explore careers, while also earning a stipend for participation. JOB1 NOLA Youth Works offers the following programs for teens and young adults: 

  • Traditional (16-24): Youth are engaged in a friendly work environment to learn skills that will help them become successful in the workplace

  • Junior Camp Counselors (ages 18-24): Youth who have an interest in working with younger children at summer camps

  • Work and Learn Youth (ages 16-24): Provided with fundamental support to prepare for college entrance through partnerships with Upward Bound Programs, as well as opportunities to succeed in precollege performance and ultimately in higher education pursuits

  • Intern NOLA (18-24): Provided with opportunities closely aligned with their career interests and areas of study

    • Only available for youth who have completed 30 college credits, and resumes and interviews are required 

Applications for NORD Teen Camps and JOB1 NOLA Youth Works opened February 20, 2024. The applications are currently available online, where applicants must complete the Pre- Registration form. Registration completion is accepted by appointment only for NORD and JOB1 NOLA Youth Works programs. The City strongly encourages participants to complete the pre-registration link to apply early due to the limited space available.

JOB1 NOLA Youth Works partners with private companies and non-profit organizations to provide quality summer experiences at safe, structured and properly supervised environments. Youth summer employment opportunities will improve the overall education of participants and help to build workforce knowledge and capacity.

The City depends on full participation from both the public and private sectors in order to provide a pathway to prosperity for young men and women.
