City of New Orleans Announces Summer Deactivation of School Zone Traffic Systems, Major Milestone Reached on Traffic Camera Revenue CEA with Orleans Parish School Board

NEW ORLEANS — Department of Public Works (DPW) announced today that all school zone traffic cameras and flashing beacons have begun being deactivated for the summer break. The process is currently under way with all devices being deactivated to coincide with the last dates that each school will be in session for this school year. All devices will be fully deactivated by July 14th. The City of New Orleans (City) anticipates reactivating these systems when schools resume in August.

Additionally, the City is pleased to announce that after months of negotiations beginning in August 2024, it has successfully come to an agreement with the Orleans Parish School Board (OPSB) on the terms of a Cooperative Endeavor Agreement (CEA) for revenue sharing. The contract is now being routed through the proper channels for final approval and execution. Once finalized, the CEA will formally establish the agreed upon 60/40 net revenue split, reinforcing a collaborative approach to resource allocation.

Meanwhile, the City will continue to work with the governing authorities of other schools within the parish to finalize their respective CEAs under similar terms and conditions.

With the school year coming to a close, the City urges drivers to remain vigilant and cautious when traveling near schools to ensure the safety of summer campers and all pedestrians.

The City of New Orleans remains dedicated to responsible governance and public safety for the benefit of all residents.
