City of New Orleans to Activate Additional School Zone Flashing beacons on Monday, Nov. 4

The City of New Orleans Department of Public Works (DPW) will activate school zone flashing beacons at several additional locations starting Monday, Nov. 4. This phased activation is part of the City’s efforts to ensure compliance with State law and enhance safety for students and drivers.

The DPW Sign Shop and Traffic Teams have been diligently working to bring school zones into compliance with Act No. 103, which requires school zone cameras to operate only during specific times: one hour before and one hour after the start of the school day, and one hour before and one hour after the end of the school day. The city continues to reprogram flashing beacons and update signage at school zones citywide.

The following school zone flashers will be activated as part of this phase:

  • Southbound South Carrollton Avenue (2000 block)
  • Eastbound Opelousas Avenue at Elmira Avenue
  • Westbound 3100 Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard
  • Eastbound 2400 Orleans Avenue

Motorists are reminded to exercise caution and adhere to posted speed limits in these zones during the designated times. Speeding violations in school zones will result in citations. School zone safety continues to be a top priority for the city.

Residents can stay informed about active school zones, camera operations, and school zone hours by visiting https://nola.gov/get-school-zone-times/. Any school zone citations issued outside of the legal hours will be dismissed. Residents with questions about tickets are encouraged to contact the Parking Adjudication Office at parkingadjudication@nola.gov for assistance.

DPW will continue to provide public updates as more school zone flashing beacons are activated.
