NOMTRCB Will Conduct Area-Wide Mosquito Abatement Tonight

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board (NOMTRCB) will conduct area wide spray missions by truck tonight, Tuesday, November 18, to target adult populations of floodwater mosquitoes. Truck treatments tonight will take place between 4:45 p.m. to 9 p.m., weather permitting, in the following area:

  • Michoud, Willow Brook, Village De L’est, Venetian Isles bounded by I-10, I-510, Chef Menteur Hwy, and the Orleans parish line

The NOMTRCB has observed elevated counts of floodwater mosquitoes as the temperature has increased since last week. While these species of mosquitoes do not play a major role in the spread of West Nile virus (WNV), they can be a major nuisance due to their painful bite and high densities. Floodwater mosquitoes are typically aggressive biters throughout the day, with a peak activity at dawn and dusk.

The City is advising residents to take precautionary steps to prevent mosquito bites especially when outside. Use repellents containing EPA-registered active ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus when outside, especially between dusk and dawn. Always follow product instructions when using repellents.

NOMTRCB will continue to trap and test mosquitoes weekly to monitor arbovirus activity. Although there have been consecutive weeks without WNV detection in mosquito samples, WNV activity is still elevated throughout the state. Human cases have been reported throughout Louisiana this year, including three cases reported in Orleans Parish.

While most human West Nile infections are asymptomatic, common symptoms include headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. In rare cases, severe illness can occur. Individuals over age 60, those who are immunocompromised, and those with certain pre-existing medical conditions are at greater risk of severe illness.
