NOMTRCB Will Conduct Area Wide Spray Missions Tonight

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board (NOMTRCB) reported yesterday that mosquito pools collected from the East Bank of Orleans Parish this week have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). WNV cycles between wild birds and mosquitoes and can be transmitted to humans and animals by the bite of an infected mosquito. These positive samples indicate that WNV is actively circulating among local mosquitoes and bird populations.

NOMTRCB will conduct area wide spray missions by truck tonight, Thursday November 20, to target adult populations of our primary WNV vector, Cx. quinquefasciatus. Truck treatments tonight will take place between 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., weather permitting, in the following areas:

  • Anthony & Milneburg bounded by Lakeshore Dr, Filmore Ave., St Bernard Ave., and Franklin Ave.
  • Tremé/Lafitte bounded by N Galvez St, N. Claiborne Ave., Canal St., and Esplanade Ave.
  • Fairgrounds bounded by I-610, Moss St., Esplanade Ave., I-10, St. Bernard Ave., and N. Broad St.

This year, NOMTRCB has observed elevated West Nile virus activity in our mosquito populations compared to previous years. Human cases have been reported throughout Louisiana this year, including three cases reported in Orleans Parish. While most human West Nile infections are asymptomatic, common symptoms include headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. In rare cases, severe illness can occur. Individuals over age 60, those who are immunocompromised, and those with certain pre-existing medical conditions are at greater risk of severe illness.

The City is urging residents to take precautionary steps when outside, including using repellents containing EPA-registered active ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535, or oil of lemon eucalyptus, especially between dusk and dawn. Always follow product instructions when using repellents. NOMTRCB is continuing to trap and test adult samples weekly to monitor arbovirus activity and conduct targeted abatement activities to reduce adult populations.
