THE CITY OF NEW ORLEANS MOSQUITO, TERMITE AND RODENT CONTROL BOARD REPORTS ADDITIONAL WNV+ MOSQUITO POOLS DETECTED

NEW ORLEANS — The City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board (NOMTRCB) reports that additional mosquito pools collected from the East Bank of Orleans Parish this week have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). WNV cycles between wild birds and mosquitoes and can be transmitted to humans and animals by the bite of an infected mosquito. These positive samples indicate that WNV is actively circulating among local mosquitoes and bird populations.

Area-wide abatement activities are temporarily suspended due to high winds and will resume once weather permits. Although temperatures have dropped, we are still observing higher than average densities of our primary WNV vector, Culex quinquefasciatus, in our weekly adult trapping. We are advising residents to take precautionary steps to prevent mosquito bites especially when they are outside for Halloween this week. Use repellents containing EPA-registered active ingredients such as DEET, picaridin, IR3535, oroil of lemon eucalyptus when you are outside, especially between dusk and dawn. Always follow product instructions when using repellents.

This year, we have observed elevated West Nile virus activity in our mosquito populations compared to previous years. Human cases have been reported throughout Louisiana this year, including 3 cases reported in Orleans Parish. While most human West Nile infections are asymptomatic, common symptoms include headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or rash. In rare cases, severe illness can occur. Individuals over age 60, those who are immunocompromised, and those with certain pre-existing medical conditions are at greater risk of severe illness. NOMTRCB is continuing to trap and test adult samples weekly to monitor arbovirus activity and conduct targeted abatement activities to reduce adult populations.
