The City of New Orleans Mosquito, Termite and Rodent Control Board (NOMTRCB) reported yesterday that mosquito pools collected from the East Bank of Orleans Parish this week have tested positive for West Nile virus (WNV). WNV cycles between wild birds and mosquitoes and can be transmitted to humans and animals by the bite of an infected mosquito. These positive samples indicate that WNV is actively circulating among local mosquitoes and bird populations.

The Louisiana Department of Health reported one human case of West Nile virus (WNV) in Orleans Parish. The resident has the neuroinvasive form of the disease.
West Nile virus cycles between wild birds and mosquitoes and can be transmitted to humans through the bite of an infected mosquito. The primary vector of West Nile virus in our region is the southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus, which is most active after dark.
