The Junior Civic Leadership Academy (JCLA) and the Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) are dual programs that strategically combine two pivotal youth empowerment initiatives to mutually reinforce the civic leadership goals of New Orleans' youth through collaborative learning. The programs provide youth with an in-depth look at city government and offer engaging hands-on demonstrations and presentations that give participants an insider's view of how the City of New Orleans operates. They are designed to allow emerging young leaders to build contacts and organizational insights while refining the tools to bring about systemic change. Students become active in the community by participating in local government and building a greater capacity for civic participation.
The Junior Civic Leadership Academy (JCLA) immerses students in hands-on learning experiences about city governance through engaging demonstrations, presentations, and an insider’s view of municipal operations. Graduates gain knowledge to actively improve community outcomes and earn a spot on the Mayor's Youth Advisory Council.
The Mayor’s Youth Advisory Council (MYAC) directly advises the Mayor on policies and issues influencing youth well-being. Council members develop recommendations through legislative research, constituent data review, and conducting an annual youth town hall to determine priority impact areas.
